Today’s Guest on Winning Teams is Barbara A. Trautlein, Ph.D., Principal and Founder, Change Catalysts, LLC.

Barbara A. Trautlein, PhD is author of the best-selling book  Change Intelligence:  Use the Power of CQ to Lead Change that Sticks, principal and founder of Change Catalysts, and originator of the CQ System for Developing Change Intelligent Leaders and Organizations. For over 25 years, Barbara has coached executives, trained leaders at all levels, certified change agents, and facilitated mission-critical change management initiatives – achieving bottom-line business and powerful leadership results for clients.

In this interview we talk in depth about the change quotient, and why we still have such a high failure rate of change within our organisations despite all the tools and methodology for implementing and managing change.

Barbara explains the difference between your Emotional Intelligence Quotient and your Change Intelligence Quotient and compares the two.  We talk about the main pitfalls we incur in Change Management and the 3 key things we need for change to be successful as well as the importance of your heart set, mind set and skill set as a change leader.

She also talks about;

  • How to bridge the gap for effective change
  • How leadership is the critical success factor for effective change, and examines whether we are really recognising everything that needs to change in the system to enable people to engage consistently?
  • How change intelligence plays out within an organisation
  • How to stay focused and not get “change fatigue”.
  • Breaking down barriers to change and recognising blind spots
  • What makes change stick and what makes it fail?

Barbara outlines techniques for equipping the leader to stay with the change to the very end and how to maintain that momentum.

We discuss the role of the leader in the process and the three stages of change, which are;

  1. The Ending
  2. The neutral zone
  3. The New Beginning

Resistance to change is normal, we discuss effective tools for overcoming resistance.

So, if you’re looking to make changes within your organisation, learn how to lead that change from the Head, Heart and Hand!

One book that made a huge impact on Barbara’s life is Man’s Search for Meaning”, written by Viktor Frankl in 1946 chronicling his experiences as an Auschwitz concentration camp inmate during World War II, and describing his psychotherapeutic method, which involved identifying a purpose in life to feel positively about, and then immersively imagining that outcome.

Daily habits and rituals; Barbara likes to start and end each day with 15 minutes of quiet time for reflection.

Barbara is giving away two free sample chapters of her book which you can download at  You can connect with Barbara on LinkedIn or Twitter.
